Bunion Prevention: Tips for Keeping Your Feet Healthy

Bunions refer to bony bumps that develop at the big toe's base joint. A bunion typically grows slowly over time, ultimately causing pain and the inability to wear certain types of shoes or footwear. If you live/work in and around Tyler, TX, Dr. James Kent of East Cobb Foot & Ankle Care offers the following professional guidance for keeping your feet healthy and bunion-free.

What Causes Bunions?

The exact cause of a bunion is not known entirely; several relevant factors and elements can contribute to a bunion forming. These include-

  • Genetics/Hereditary Factors
  • Foot Structure/Mechanics
  • Improper/Ill-fitting Footwear
  • Medical Conditions & Foot Injuries/Trauma
  • Joint/Repetitive Stress & Overuse

Bunion Prevention: Tips for Keeping Your Feet Healthy

In addition to making sure you choose shoes that are comfortable – with a wide-toe box that provides sufficient space for your toes [i.e., no pointed shoes or high heels); you can prevent bunions from developing by –

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Keeping your weight at recommended levels decreases the risk of bunion development and aggravating existing bunions.

Using Protective Padding

Consider using padded cushions or orthotic shoe inserts to redistribute pressure away from the bunion and provide extra support. Non-medicated bunion pads or splints may provide some relief by realigning the big toe.

Stretching/Exercising Toes

Exercises or stretches - like using your toes to pick up marbles, can help improve foot strength and flexibility.

Orthotics and Arch Support

Custom or over-the-counter orthotics can redistribute the pressure evenly across your foot (to improve foot mechanics) and help reduce the pain and pressure associated with bunions.

Avoiding High-Impact Sports

High-impact activities place additional stress on the feet and toes.

Footwear Modifications

If you already have bunions, you might need to make modifications to the footwear you purchase, such as stretching, as this will help provide extra room for the bunion.

Note that in some cases, bunion surgery may be necessary to correct severe cases that do not respond to conservative measures. Bunion surgery may be considered –

  • A head procedure that treats the joint of the big toe.
  • A base procedure that focuses on the bone near/behind the big toe joint.
