What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

The foot is a very complex structure made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles. Many things can cause foot pain. When one structure in the foot is not working properly or is injured, all of the other structures may be affected. A common reason that people consult with a podiatrist is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis can cause excruciating foot pain. Our podiatrists in Tyler, TX, Dr. James Kent and Dr. Hyun Young Kho of East Texas Foot & Ankle Center can help to greatly relieve your foot pain.

The plantar fascia is a band of connective tissue that runs the length of the sole of the foot. The plantar fascia connects your heel bone to the bones of your toes. This band of tissue supports the foot when walking. The plantar fascia also acts as a shock absorber of the entire weight of the body when you walk.

Sometimes, this structure can become inflamed because it has been overworked or overstressed. This can cause tiny tears to occur in the fascia, leading to significant pain. It is important to treat this condition as soon as you notice it: because if left untreated, it will likely get worse and/or cause other issues in the foot and leg. It is imperative to make an appointment for your foot pain with Dr. James Kent in Tyler, TX right away.

Some risk factors, according to East Texas Foot & Ankle Center, are:

  • Fallen arches in your feet (also known as flat feet). This condition may be genetic or it may be the result of the plantar fascia having lost integrity and no longer supporting the arch of your foot.
  • Repetitive, pounding activity that places a significant amount of stress on your feet
  • Increased age will naturally predispose the plantar fascia to injury as it loses elasticity.
  • Obesity
  • Occupations that keep you on your feet for most of the day.

Symptoms:

  • Generally, although the plantar fascia runs the length of the foot, pain is usually felt near the heel.
  • Intense pain with your first step out of bed in the morning.
  • Pain may also increase after long periods of sitting.
  • Foot pain from Plantar Fasciitis will usually increase after an activity, rather than during it.

Foot pain from plantar fasciitis is usually easily treated by a course of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), a period of rest, and a course of physical therapy to strengthen the structures of the foot. Custom orthotics may be recommended as well to better support your feet during activity. Surgical intervention is rarely needed with a diagnosis of Plantar Fasciitis.
